WHAT I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CARPET BACKING...
WHAT IS CARPET BACKING?
Essentially, it is a carpet’s foundation. Backing is the fundamental structure which holds carpet yarns in place and makes carpet stable throughout its lifetime.
WHAT’S SO IMPORTANT ABOUT QUALITY BACKING?
One of the ways better quality carpet maintains its beauty and durability is based on the kind of backing used by the manufacturer. Backing contributes to the carpet’s pattern straightness, its ability to keep its shape and not wrinkle, its seam strength, its tuft bind and its overall appearance.
ISN’T ALL BACKING THE SAME?
Not, at all. Some carpet mills invest up to three times more on backing systems that give the consumer a softer carpet that performs better over the life of the carpet. Traditional carpet can be very stiff, and others the bare minimum in performance. Over time, these backings loosen up and carpet can lose its crisp look, actually sagging and wrinkling.
WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS IF CARPET SAGS OR WRINKLES?
Generally, a carpet can be restretched after it adjusts to its new surroundings. More advanced premium carpet backings mean you can avoid the potential from day one.
WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR I A PREMIUM BACKING?
Ask for a carpet made with a backing that’s both comfortable and dimensional stable. They will be obvious as you inspect the store sample because not only is the carpet more pliable, the backing is actually soft to the touch. The best carpet backing will contain two layers-a woven layer for axial integrity and a non-woven layer for added softness and dimensional stability.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM A CARPET WITH A PREMIUM BACKING?
Better fit, seams and pattern matching, soft underfoot comfort, improved wear characteristics and increased sound and thermal insulation. There’s also a side benefit to softer premium backings. Not only does carpet stretch better and stay that way, because the backing is soft and pliable, there are fewer scratches to walls and woodwork during installation.
